Season 1 — Land Captures

Strongholds vs Cities — the protection-lock trick, durability, and what you can build

Key Insight — The Stronghold Lock Trick
Strongholds get a flat 36-hour protection lock when captured. If a friendly alliance rushes to capture a neutral stronghold, the enemy alliance is locked out for 36 hours from that tile — a real denial / area-control tactic. Cities don't work this way: an attack on a city only drains its durability over time, and that durability recovers only passively over time. There is no equivalent "ally rush" lock for cities — they're a war of attrition.
Stronghold — single-attack model
Capture by attacking the Corruptor boss + zombies guarding the tile. Requires Virus Resistance. One alliance attack/rally either captures it or fails — binary outcome. After capture: 36-hour protection, 1 hour to abandon. 2 strongholds/day max (global across all warzones). Cross-warzone unlocks at Week 3 Day 2 via an Alliance Outpost.
City — durability-drain model
Capture by declaring war (1-hour war duration). Attackers drain the city's durability; defender troops resist. Only R4/R5 can declare. 1 war at a time per alliance. After capture: protection until next Declaration Day 12:00 server time (max ~6-7 days). 2 cities/day max. After Week 4 Day 3, declarations are restricted to Wednesday + Saturday only.
Capture Comparison — Stronghold vs City
Side-by-side reference for every mechanic that differs between the two land types in Season 1 ("The Crimson Plague").
Aspect Stronghold City
Capture method Direct attack / rally on Corruptor + Infected Zombie defender War declaration → 1-hour war → drain durability to 0
Capture loss model Binary — all or nothing Gradual — durability drains across attacks
Durability recovery N/A (no durability bar) Passive over time only — no defender-triggered reset
Daily limit (global) 2/day across all warzones 2/day war declarations across all warzones
Protection after capture 36 hours (same value home + cross-warzone) Until next Declaration Day 12:00 server time, max ~6-7 days
Defending a tile resets protection? Protection resets only when ownership changes Protection resets only when ownership changes
Abandon duration 1 hour 1 hour
Recapture cooldown after abandon None explicitly documented 5-day protection before you can recapture
Virus Resistance required Yes — Corruptor inflicts virus on troops regardless of VR Yes — siege troops can be infected during city wars
Cross-warzone unlock Week 3 Day 2 (Outpost required) Week 4 Day 3 (Stronghold-chain connection required)
Cross-warzone declaration days (post-W4 D3) Any day Wednesday + Saturday only
Rank to initiate Not explicitly restricted (any participating member's rally) R4 / R5 only
Adjacency requirement Own adjacent stronghold OR Alliance Outpost in that warzone Direct chain connection through controlled strongholds
Multiple in flight Multiple attacks possible (no exclusivity) Only 1 city war at a time per alliance
The Stronghold Protection Lock — Strategic Exploit
Because every captured stronghold enters a non-attackable 36-hour state, a friendly alliance can deliberately rush to capture a neutral or enemy-adjacent stronghold before the enemy gets there. The lock window denies them that tile and forces them around your perimeter for 36 hours.
1
Identify the threat tile. Find a neutral stronghold (or an enemy adjacent tile) that gives the rival alliance access to a contested city chain or your home territory.
2
Confirm capability. Verify your alliance has Virus Resistance ≥ the stronghold's requirement (use the VR calculator if rallying). Confirm you haven't already used both daily stronghold slots.
3
Rush the rally. Launch a fully-loaded rally on the Corruptor. A win locks the tile to your alliance for 36 hours — the enemy alliance cannot attack it during that window.
4
Chain-lock the perimeter. If you have multiple strongholds available to capture, lay them in a wall along the contested edge. After ~36hrs, abandon (1 hr) and recapture to refresh — or rotate to an adjacent stronghold and lock that one instead.
5
Budget the cost. Each rush burns 1 of your 2 daily stronghold capture slots and consumes troop healing. Save these slots for high-impact blocks — the strongholds adjacent to enemy outposts or in front of valuable cities.
Important caveat
The 36-hour timer is a published mechanic, not a hidden exploit — every Season 1 source documents the protection window. The "trick" is using it offensively for area denial instead of just defensively after your own captures. There is no rule against it, and it works on captured strongholds in both your home warzone and other warzones.
Why This Trick Doesn't Work on Cities
Capacity Limits — How Much Land Can An Alliance Own?
Land Type Home Warzone Other Warzones (combined) Total Cap Notes
Strongholds 3 base per warzone 3 base per foreign warzone 3 × (warzones you operate in) + city bonuses Each warzone tracks its own cap: 3 base + 1 per Lv 1-5 city you own in that warzone + 2 per Lv 6 city you own in that warzone
Cities 4 max 4 max 8 total Other-warzone counter is shared across all foreign warzones
Alliance Outposts 4 max (1 per warzone) 4 Placed by R4/R5, irretractable, unlocks one per week starting W4
Stronghold cap is PER WARZONE — easy to miss
Each warzone tracks its own stronghold cap independently. Placing an Alliance Outpost in a new foreign warzone immediately gives you +3 baseline stronghold capacity in that warzone before any city captures. Then your stronghold cap in that warzone grows by +1 for each Lv 1-5 city and +2 for each Lv 6 city you own in that same warzone.

Worked example: Alliance operating in 5 warzones (1 home, 4 foreign via outposts), holding 7 cities (mix of levels) — observed actual: 25 strongholds.

Foreign B113 + 0 + 1×25
Foreign C003 + 0 + 03
Foreign D003 + 0 + 03

Cities are still globally capped at 8 (4 home + 4 spread across all foreign warzones).
Influence Points by City Level
Capturing a city awards Influence Points (IP) to your alliance's seasonal ranking. The IP curve is steep at Lv 6:

What You Can Build On / Near Captured Land
Strongholds are mostly territorial markers (no buildable surface), but cities are the construction substrate. There are two distinct build paths: Alliance Outposts (universal cross-warzone tool) and Builder Alliance facilities (mid-season switch).
Structure Where Placed Who Builds Effect / Notes
Alliance Outpost Other warzone territory (free placement on the warzone map) R4 / R5 Bridgehead for first cross-warzone captures. Members can teleport to its territory. Vulnerable to single attacks once built; can be destroyed and rebuilt. 1 per warzone, 4 total per alliance. Irretractable once placed.
Collection Depot Builder Adjacent to a city R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Collection speed +10% (local warzone)
Engineering Center Builder Adjacent to a city R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Construction speed +10% (local warzone)
Research Laboratory Builder Adjacent to a city R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Research speed +10% (local warzone)
Training Center Builder Adjacent to a city R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Training speed +5% (local warzone)
Iron / Gold / Food Factory Builder Adjacent to a city R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Hourly resource production (separate facility per resource type)
Medical Station Builder Adjacent to a city (city-range buff) R4 / R5 (Builder mode) PvP loss rate -5% for troops inside the city's radius
Radar Station Builder Adjacent to a city (city-range buff) R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Hero defense +5%
Arsenal Builder Adjacent to a city (city-range buff) R4 / R5 (Builder mode) Hero attack +5%
City Durability bonus Universal Triggered per facility built R4 / R5 (Builder mode) City durability limit +10% per facility — the only Builder buff that propagates cross-server
